The Lone Star Iconoclast weekly newspaper of Crawford, Texas, which is critical of President Bush, publishes several updates each day from the protests to a simple page, a handmade blog. Last night , reporter Gene Ellis filed a long story, with photos, from the scene at Camp Casey, the site of Gold Star Mother Cindy Sheehan's bivouac near President Bush's ranch in Crawford. (Sheehan is in Los Angeles with her mother, who suffered a stroke Thursday, but other families who have lost a loved one in the Iraq war are continuing her effort to meet with George Bush.)

A counter-protest, a candlelight vigil at the Yellow Rose in Crawford, is planned for Saturday night. The Yellow Rose is a store whose sign advertises art, guns, ammo and other hard goods. Its owner, Bill Johnson, a friend of Mr. Bush, is organizing the vigil.

Ellis also updates a morning report that Camp Casey coordinator Ann Wright "...did say that Joan Baez will be there on Sunday." The folk singer's protest songs were part of the earliest soundtrack of the '60s civil rights and Vietnam war protest movements.

There is still an unconfirmed rumor that Joan Baez will make an appearance during the weekend, as well as might other well-known entertainers. The camp coordinators say the entertainment is for the benefit of the supporters. The general public is not encouraged to attend any concerts or other entertainment that may occur. Parking would be a major problem if large crowds came for the entertainment, it was noted.

Earlier in the week, I had heard that Baez would be part of a concert at the camp Sunday afternoon but my emails seeking confirmation from Ms. Baez's staff and from media contacts in Crawford were not answered.

The photo is of Baez and Bob Dylan performing at the 1963 civil rights March on Washington, from the National Archives.
