The Gallery of Unfortunate 4th Of July Cards

Cap'n Wacky's comments aded a dimension of their own to dozens of cards from the era when anything went.

July 4th fireworks canceled in Providence -- the Statehouse site is too close to buildings and another can't be found -- is truly disappointing news. Like bread and circuses, fireworks make the citizens happy. Mayor Cicilline needs to work on this.

The PawSox, bless 'em, have stepped into the breach with fireworks at McCoy Stadium n Pawtucket four nights in a row, Wednesday through Saturday. When I get to work I'll see where else they're shooting off this week.

I have vivid memories as a toddler of awe and joy that the whole world celebrated my July 3 birthday so spectacularly. And of course I had to touch the glowing magic of a sparkler's business end, but just once.
