Developed with state and local election officials and the Voting Information Project. In conjunction with the League of Women Voters.

Watching the long lines of early voters on TV in some states, I'm wondering how Rhode Island's 700,000 registered voters -- minus absentees and the estimated 30 percent who'll be no-shows -- will all squeeze their voting into Tuesday.

My daughter asked why election day isn't a day off. I told her voting was once a ten-minute detour before work, like stopping for gas. Not this year, I suspect.

To handle the expected crush, the state is opening nearly 550 polling places. When I used the widget above, I found that my polling place has changed from the church basement of recent years to the newly reopened nursing home across the street. You might want to check yours, too, to avoid having to stand in two lines.

In case you're wondering, the example address in the form above is that of The Providence Journal building. No one officially lives here.

This Google widget only tells you where to vote on Tuesday. At the state's Rhode Island Voter Information Center Web page, you can "Check your voter registration, view sample ballots for upcoming elections, locate your local board of canvassers, and find where to vote." I checked out the ballot, and found it mercifully short this time.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you have a choice, try to vote in the middle of the day. The longest lines are expected at the beginning and end of this period.

For those who aren't online, Rhode Island has set up a hotline voters can call voice to access their election information: (401) 222-2340.
