We put together a new Web tool this week that lets us update the projo.com homepage 24/7 to alert you to news. It's a dedicated blog that's usually empty. But if we post news to it, the published entry triggers the appearance of a banner atop projo.com's homepage that contains the blog post's headline, the first 20 words of the story and a link to the rest, ending with a timestamp. It's a geeky marble-go-througher. News Alerts got its first workout last night. Relaxing at home after a fine paella dinner, I got a call that there had been a fatal explosion in a house in Somerset, Mass. Could I guide the night desk through the process of posting the report to the projo homepage? In case you were elsewhere, here are two screenshots of what happened:
By coincidence, the Weather Alert was also up. We didn't know if they'd play well together, but they do. The code on the projo homepage is pretty intimidating if you're not a projo staffer, but most reporters and editors are now comfortable posting to our blogs, which are are accessible from anywhere. So expect to see more news appearing at odd hours on our homepage in the future.

I waited a coupla days to see if my boss answered you. :)
Thanks, Jef. We're tunneling with a spoon here, but that doesn't mean there aren't breakthroughs from time to time. I love it that you're rooting for us.
