Wearing a bronze lace dress and a serious demeanor, eyebrows shaped and the gray gone from her styled hair, Susan Boyle was still recognizable, but seemed tamed as she sang "Memory" from Cats. in the second round of the Britain's Got Talent competition.

The song is less personal and powerful -- sappy lyrics will do that -- than "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables, the performance that took the world by storm on her first appearance. But the Scottish singer had only to hit the right notes to be ushered into the finals. She did, and she was the top choice of viewers who made Britain's version of a paid 900-number call to record their votes. The judges then picked a second winner from the two next-highest vote-getters, dance act Diversity.

Susan was the last of eight finalists Sunday night, the first of five such contests this week. Her appearance was preceded by a retrospective. If you want to skip that, she is introduced at 1:20 in the video.

The overall winner, who'll receive £100,000 and perform for the Queen as part of the Dec. 11 Royal Variety Performance, is to be chosen next Saturday, May 30, after a live show pitting the 10 finalists against each other.

I hope Susan does a blockbuster song for that one. But not "My Way."
