Music legend Bob Dylan is "talking to a couple of car companies" about becoming the voice of their GPS system.

The singer-songwriter discussed the possibility on his BBC Radio 6 Music Sunday show which was on the theme of street maps.

Renowned for his raspy, nasally tones, the 68-year-old American gave his listeners a taster of what his directions might sound like.

"Left at the next street. No, right. You know what? Just go straight." He continued: "I probably shouldn't do it because whichever way I go, I always end up at one place - on Lonely Avenue. Luckily I'm not totally alone. Ray Charles beat me there."

Dylan telling you to go straight??

The really surprising part of this:

His Theme Time Radio Hour is on Mondays at midnight. The singer is currently on hiatus, and this week's show was a repeat. His comments had not previously been reported.

But it doesn't seem to have happened yet. And there's no recent mention of this on the bobdylan Twitter feed.

The current celebrity voices that guide you around on Garmin and Tomtom systems are an odd lot -- Mr. T, KITT the car from Knight Rider, Burt Reynolds -- and range from free to $9.95. Pigtones' "Politically Incorrect GPS Voices" feature impersonations of celebs such as George Bush and Sean Connery, Stewie from Family Guy, Joey Soprano, Santa and more.

Here's a taste of the GPS vocabulary, from The Ultimate Guide to Creating Your Own TomTom Voice Files, in case you'd rather tell yourself where to go.

GPS Voices Downloads for Your Car GPS is a portal with download and installation instructions.

Denise Bass emailed me this news, and it led me down a Yellow Brick Road I'd never thought about.

I'd like a family member to be my guide, I think. Maybe husband Joe's soothing voice, or the sage-smart 12-year-old.

Thanks for the road trip, Denise.
