A reader requested that I survey the food sections for cookies as I do for holiday dinner recipes. Here's the first installment. This week, my colleague Gail Ciampa, the Journal Food Editor, has been baking up a storm as she test new cookie recipes, and we'll have her recommended recipes early next week. The New York Daily News goes for beautiful cookies/tree ornaments. Any recipe that includes "super pearl luster dust" deserves respect. Peace Doves are a designer's dream, but my family has earthier tastes, and I am not crafty.

The Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle continues its annual 12 Days of Cookies tradition; so far, they've published Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies (made with chickpea flour), Benne Wafers, made with sesame, and Green Tea Biscotti.
