New garden blogs

Two new additions to the Garden Blogs list I've been maintaining here for a few years:

hummingbirdmoth.jpgDreams and Bones is a stylish blog from West Tisbury, Mass. -- Martha's Vineyard. Gardener Leslie Gray writes, "I'm on the Vineyard and as this is my first year of retirement, this is my first full gardening season. I used to walk away from my garden every August and leave the bounty for the renters. Now it's my turn."

Leslie also has time to deal with squash bugs and blister beetles, and to offer zucchini recipes for everyone whose crop more than came in.

The photos are knockouts, as you can see at right. I had never seen a hummingbird moth before.

Cincinnati Cape Cod: Sabine of Sabine's Garden, below, wrote to tell me of a garden blog by Kasmira in Cincinnati, Ohio should be on that list.

The unusual name of the blog does not reflect a merger of midwest and Massachusetts. In her very first post, Kasmira notes that they've bought a Cape Cod-style house in Cincinnati.

Another fine photographer with a green thumb!

Hey, this is great! Direct commenting. I've been away from blogging for a spell and missed the changeover. Nice job!

Actually, I should be commenting to the beer post. I was going to say that you left out one that beats 'em both, imho---right from your backyard--i.e., Sam Adams Light. I'm not a fan of the regular Sam, but I had my first Sam Light the other day when I was feeling full (I normally never touch the light stuff)--and Eureka! It was good, although I embarassed my son in saying so. He's now convinced that I truly have lost it.
Anyway, what's a New Englander's verdict on the local stuff?

Hi, Tom, welcome back!

A lot of people like Sam Adams, but real Rhode Islanders don't consider it -- or Boston -- "local." We don't like to drive more than 10 minutes anywhere. We pack supplies to go 30 miles.

Rhode Island was founded because Massachusetts Bay Colony kicked Roger Williams out of Salem, and we still give them the hairy eyeball.

Any state that would elect Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Mitt Romney is a bit baffling!

Do you garden?

I saw a hummingbird moth the other day, on our butterfly bush. Tried really hard to get a photo but they're just too darn fast (nearly as fast as a real hummingbird). Hadn't seen one for YEARS, and had to go to search engines to remind myself if it really was called a 'hummingbird moth'. Found some great photos. I admire anyone who can get a photo of these...

Do I garden? No--unless pulling weeds in a never-ending battle qualifies one for the club. Actually, I re-potted a plant for the very first time the other day, so maybe creeping age is moving me in that direction. If it is, then I'll have you for a role model.

As for your neighbor's politicians, no stranger than my state's (California). Sorry for the mis-use of the term "local." I should have known Bay State products are foreign goods.

Liz, I like to think the cameras have gotten better.(:
