Peering into New Orleans
You may recall that we led our Katrina links with The Interdictor, the blog of directNIC.com, an ISP in New Orleans whose live webcam pointed at Poydras Street, kept alive by a generator.
The Interdictor has morphed into NOLA.us, with blog (different link but same blog as The Interdictor link above) and forums. The main link there leads with a poignant message:
We miss you. After Katrina left we thought that you would return. Now we are not so sure. We at directNIC.com have been lonely and hard at work for the past month in New Orleans. Please come home, and bring cleaning supplies, be ready to work hard, and be prepared to find a place other than your home to sleep in.
Their reports continue, with headlines such as, "New Orleans Hospitals Stable, but Prognosis Uncertain," "FEMA, Media, and Restoration Companies Taking Over the Best Parking Lots" and "A Heads-Up for Job Seekers Returning to NOLA"
Soundtrack: WWOZ in Exile, the News Orleans Jazz & Heritage station, is still broadcasting live on the Web.
Related: Photo Op Bites Back. Dan Froomkin in the Washington Post:
It was such a lovely photo op -- President Bush and his wife joining the volunteers building a house in Louisiana. The perfect backdrop for an upbeat interview, live on NBC's Today Show.
But then Matt Lauer had to go and pull back the curtain and ask: Isn't this all just a empty photo op?
What ensued was an unusually testy interview, with Bush waving off more questions than he answered, chiding Lauer for quoting too many Democrats in his windups and making it clear that he would have been much happier fielding questions about the charitable nature of the American people than about politics.
